Top Tips for Successful Speed Networking

1

Like a less awkward version of speed dating, Speed Networking helps you meet the right people, right away. Here are eight pointers on how to get the most out of it.

Speed Networking – it’s more effective than speed-dating and also less awkward. You can make crucial business connections in a structured and friendly environment, face-to-face and one at a time, without too many distractions. It’s simple… but not always easy. After all, you’re meeting many new people, one after the other, for no more than a few minutes at a time. High-speed doesn’t have to mean high-stress, though: here are some top tips for getting the most out of a Speed Networking event. Take note, because this will become important to you rather soon…

1. Get your elevator pitch ready.

If you can describe what you do and what you’re looking for in the equivalent of a tweet or two, you’ve probably nailed it.

2. Pack loads of business cards.

This is a must for CloudFest, but even more important for Speed Networking. Bring more than you think you’ll need: even in the Smartphone Era, a good business card never goes out of style.

3. Bring a positive attitude.

Enjoy the process of meeting new people without using a social media app!

4. Know what you want.

Visualize what you’re hoping to get out of the event before you start. Actually, this is pretty much the same as with speed dating. Prepare a list of questions you might ask potential colleagues to discover ways of working together.

5. Be respectful.

Speed Networking isn’t just about the speed… it’s about the networking. Remember to listen to the person across from you, make eye contact (in a non-creepy way), and smile.

6. Ask a personal question or two.

There’s always a moment to learn more about the actual person across from you, and not just the role they fill from 9 to 5. (As above “non-creepy” is key here. Don’t be “that guy” on LinkedIn – you know the one we mean.)

7. Follow up later.

Either at a social event (CloudFest has plenty of those) or after the conference is done, be sure to get back in touch with the people you met at the Speed Networking event.

8. Relax!

Breathe in, breathe out, and smile. You’re prepared, you look great, and you’re gonna rock it.

As you may have already guessed, we aren’t just sharing this list randomly. The CloudFest Team is all about facilitating real and meaningful connections – this is why we’re thrilled to introduce Speed Networking to CloudFest.
