Believe the Hype—Hank Shocklee of Public Enemy

Meet one of hip hop's masterminds: a sonic architect and musical futurist

While the world is torn apart, creators build it back up with hard work and ideas, beauty and art, invention, reinvention and challenge. We don’t care about your rules or your trends, your ratings or your gossip, your disinformation or your hype. While history gets rewritten, we’re creating a new one.

So says Hank Shocklee, co-founder of seminal hip hop group Public Enemy and a CloudFest 2019 keynote speaker.

Hank is a musical mastermind, having produced massive albums for some of the most successful artists across multiple genres, including LL Cool J, Mary J. Blige, Ice Cube, and EPMD; as well as remixing albums for Peter Gabriel, Tricky, and Sinéad O’Connor.

Hank has pushed forward the techniques and technology of sampling, and his work lived at the heart of debates around copyright law—issues studied by pop culture historians and academics to this day. Through his group Shocklee Entertainment, he seeks to find the “future frequency” that takes us to new places in music, art, and commerce, using the internet as a vehicle.

Hank has been inducted into the RocknRoll Hall of Fame, and embodies over 40 years of musical innovation. At CloudFest 2019, you’ll hear directly from Hank what that future frequency will sound like.
